Sharia law: Barbaric or Misunderstood?

Here is the video of the lecture I gave at the University of Sussex on the 14th November 2012, entitled, ‘Shariah law: Barbaric or Misunderstood?’.

The discussion in the question & answer session with the students, was very interesting, with many challenging questions being posed. Please watch to see the vibrant discourse that emerged.

Salam brother Abdullah, I really like how you tackle the tabooed topics with an authentic stance, which is rare, as most are either too general or ashamed about it, making their own exclusive interpretations. At the other extreme are people who declare their support for corporal sharia without justifying the reasoning and conditions, which understandably enrages the non-muslims.

Thank you brother. Muslims should never be ashamed of Islam. Rather, we should seek to explain it using wisdom and warm speech.

Thanks for the response, I do have a question for you which I would be interested in hearing your opinions on. As we know, the only unforgivable sin is to die in the state of associating partners with God. Do you believe that people who are not aware of the teachings of Islam but still believe in strictly one God will be forgiven or not? For example I have many friends with Christian backgrounds that do no believe in the Bible or follow any religion, but still believe in one God, what is your opinion on them in terms of salvation?
