MDI is proud to announce the release of the debate video “Secular Law or Sharia Law: Which is Fairer?“ between me and President of the Atheist Foundation of Australia, Michael Boyd.

The event was originally hosted by the IAFUNSW [Islamic Awareness Forum of the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia)] on 18th September 2015.

The event featured a fascinating debate comparing Secularism with Islamic law (Sharia) and Islamic government, which ended in an unusual agreement between me and the Atheist speaker, on the desirability of unity and Caliphate for the Muslim world as a means to achieve peace (where secularism is currently failing). Someone from the audience rounded off the debate with an interesting question “what is the purpose of secularism?”, which led to an appropriate ending.

An amazing must watch video with an interesting twist at the end.

IAFUNSW’s Debate Description:

Oh? You thought this matter was settled? Think again. In a world that cries for rights, justice and complete 4G coverage, but still can’t seem to strike that balance, we haven’t all yet agreed upon what the best way is to organise society. Should it change with the times? Can we, the masses, really be trusted to know what society’s best interest are? Is there only one answer?

As part of our IAW FINALE, Abdullah al Andalusi and Michael Boyd presented their cases for the Shari`a and Secular Government respectively in a REVOLUTIONARY new debate/cross examination/verbal surgery/rhetorical fumigation format that is guaranteed to bring us the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help us, God!

Michael Boyd is the president of the Australian Atheist Foundation, a position he has held since 2013, and is a lawyer by profession.

Abdullah Al Andalusi is an international Islamic speaker, thinker and activist. He cofounded the Muslim Debate Initiative which serves as a forum for open dialogue and critical debate.
